For years, I was trapped in my head-story, writing for scholars instead of real people.

Let’s start with an exercise.  Put one hand in front of your head, and let it go down like an elevator to your heart.

Answer this question: How do you Feel?

ACTIVITY: CHANGE YOUR BET FROM THE ELEVATOR TO YOUR HEART-STORY

Step 1: Your “Elevator Pitch” (The Surface-Level Story)

Think about the way you introduce yourself and your business.
👉 Write it down in 2-3 sentences. (Example: “I’m a business coach helping entrepreneurs grow their revenue.”)
👉 Now ask yourself: Does this feel exciting? Does it move you? Or does it feel like an autopilot answer?

Step 2: The Messy Truth (What’s Beneath Your Elevator Pitch)

Now, let’s go deeper:

This is where the Heart-Story lives.
And here’s the truth: Entrepreneurs don’t scale past 6 or 7 figures without mastering Heart-Stories.

It takes more that the Heart-story, your Entrepreneur’s Storytelling Journey means sharing testimonials, metaphors, the failures and the successes. Some Zingers:

How to find your Heart-Story?


HEART-STORY: MY CONVERSATION WITH DAVEY (MY INNER CHILD)

(This is where you tell a raw, real, unfiltered story about getting stuck and how you begin your Restorying journey after a coach at Genius Unlocked® asked me questions to help me get unstuck).

David (77-year-old Adult): Hey, kid. It’s me—you. Older, wiser, still figuring things out.

Inner Child (Young David): Oh. You can talk to me now? You usually just ignore me.

David: Yeah, I know. I’ve been stuck in my head for too long, trying to prove myself. But I see you now. I remember you.

Inner Child: Do you? ’Because I remember feeling small. Invisible. Not enough. My parents called me by a nickname, ‘Worry Wart.’ And that I was dumb, not smart like them.

David: Yeah… I carried that Worry Wart with me for a long time. The I’m dumb belief moved me to over prepare, over deliver: I had to be the smartest person in the room, or I wasn’t worth anything.

Inner Child: That’s why you work so hard, isn’t it? Writing all those unreadable books.

David: Yeah. But you know what I forgot? I forgot what it felt like to tell a story just because I loved it. I forgot why I loved teaching.

Inner Child: Like back at Loyola Marymount? When students ‘actually’ liked learning? And yelled out Boje, Boje, Boje, when faculty filed in for the graduation ceremony.

David: Exactly. When in every class, I had them stand on their chairs and shout,
👉 “I feel Healthy, I feel Happy, I feel Terrific!”

Inner Child: That was before you started taking everything so seriously. You turned to “M.A.D.”

David: I changed my bet on the future. I let one scholar’s critique shake me so badly. He called me McPostmodern, can you believe it.

Inner Child: So, what happens now?

David: Now? Now, I Restory. I go back to the beginning. I make a new bet on the future. I bring back the H.H.T. parts of me I buried. I tell heart-stories that people get energized by, and use.

A New Voice Joins: Higher Self

Higher Self (Jainism David): You both have done well to find each other again, but there is another part of us that needs acknowledgment—the part that transcends fear, transcends ego, and embraces Ahimsa—non-violence in thought, emotion, and behavior.

Inner Child: Whoa. Who’s that?

David: That’s our Higher Self. The part of us that found Jainism after meeting Grace Ann. The part that understands compassion not just as an idea, but as a way of being.

Higher Self: Yes, David. You embraced the path of non-violence, but in many ways, you still judge yourself. You still carry violence in your thoughts—towards yourself, towards your past, even towards your own work. Do you not see? Ahimsa applies to the stories we tell ourselves, too.

Inner Child (Davey): Whoa… So even when David was being mean to himself, that was a kind of violence?

Higher Self: Yes. The first True Storytelling Principle states: Truth: You must be true and prepare the energy and effort for a sustainable future (Larsen, Boje, & Bruun, 2021). But truth cannot be built on self-punishment. You must live in truth, not just for others but for yourself.

David (Adult): So how do I restory my thoughts and emotions in a way that aligns with Ahimsa?

Higher Self: By seeing your past not as a burden, but as a lesson. By applying the first antenarrative process—#1. Beneath: The foundation of our pre-story, where we establish our values and passions and uncover unconscious story driving our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. You must go beneath the story of self-doubt and embrace the story of self-compassion. Just as you teach others to shift their narratives, you must do the same for yourself.

Inner Child: So does that mean I don’t have to be afraid of the past anymore?

Higher Self: Fear is natural, but it need not define you. Instead, embrace the story of love, creativity, and joy. Bring back the parts of you that loved teaching, loved storytelling, loved connecting with others—not to prove anything, but because it is who you are.

David: So the next step is to write with love? Teach with love? Tell stories that heal instead of stories that critique?

Higher Self: Exactly. True storytelling is not just about exposing what is broken. It is about healing. It is about moving forward in alignment with Ahimsa, with truth, with purpose. And in doing so, you will truly embody, I feel healthy. I feel happy. I feel terrific.

Inner Child: That sounds like a story worth living.

David (Adult: It does, doesn’t it? Alright then—let’s get to work.

 


WHY HEART-STORIES SCALE YOUR BUSINESS

  2. ‘Story-filters[i]  like M.A.D. are unconscious part of your ‘story filtering,’ and they block you’re you from telling your ❤️-story, and audience from trusting you.

OVERCOMING OBJECTIONS: WHY ENTREPRENEURS DON’T SCALE

OBJECTION 1: “I don’t have time for this.”

👉 The Truth: You don’t have time NOT to master storytelling.
👉 Solution: Heart-stories shorten the sales process by 50%.
