Welcome! I’m David Boje, an Assertiveness Trainer and Coach. I invite you to join me on a journey to master Conversational Assertiveness. Over the years, I’ve trained countless individuals, from engineers at Hughes Aircraft to entrepreneurs and leaders across industries, in the art of handling difficult conversations. Assertiveness isn’t about being aggressive or passive—it’s about finding the balance to communicate with clarity, respect, and confidence.
In our Conversational Storytelling for Business program, you’ll learn how to use storytelling and dialogue to navigate challenges, build trust, and create meaningful connections in your professional and personal life. Whether you’re giving feedback, addressing conflicts, or negotiating, the tools I teach will help you achieve a successful, win-win outcome.
These simple yet powerful steps can transform your conversations. My proven method emphasizes Taking Responsibility by starting with: “I have a problem. Can we talk?” This approach fosters a non-defensive dialogue and creates space for meaningful resolution.

Just Assertive Enough in Difficult Conversations
Growing up, I learned what poverty truly felt like. After my parents divorced, my family struggled to scrape by. My dad paid three alimony payments and then disappeared from his financial obligations. We were on welfare, and as a teenager, I worked in a tire shop instead of attending high school, just to help make ends meet. That early experience shaped my understanding of money as a tool for survival and created a deep-seated anger and frustration that influenced my decisions and often got me into trouble. It was the Army, and later education, that gave me the foundation to begin rebuilding my life.
Money continued to be a source of struggle as I navigated my life and career. After earning my Ph.D. and landing my first job at UCLA, I thought I had made it. But my feelings of inadequacy—imposter syndrome—led to struggles in my work, and eventually, I didn’t get tenure. That failure shattered my confidence and left me financially and emotionally broken. Later, I started a personnel company and eventually earned a tenure position at Loyola Marymount University, but the journey was filled with sacrifices and uncertainty.
Years of financial instability left lasting scars. The stress of living paycheck to paycheck and my inability to feel secure even in moments of success haunted me. These struggles weren’t just monetary—they affected my self-worth, relationships, and ability to trust myself. Even after Grace Ann, my second wife, brought love and stability into my life, money remained a sensitive topic. It wasn’t until we worked our way out of bankruptcy and built a stable life together that I began to see money as something more than a source of stress—it became a tool for freedom.
Over time, I’ve come to redefine what “a lot of money” means to me. It’s not about achieving wealth for its own sake but about ensuring freedom: freedom from poverty, freedom from fear, and freedom to live authentically. My goal is to have enough to provide security for myself and my loved ones, while also being able to give back—to help others tell their stories and leave a meaningful legacy.
Reflecting on my journey, especially after being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, has stripped away the nonessentials and clarified what truly matters. Money is a tool, not a measure of happiness. It enables me to create opportunities, reduce suffering, and share my gifts with others. Without this understanding, I might still be chasing financial security in a way that felt hollow and disconnected from my values.
When I think about money now, it’s deeply tied to the feelings of fear and struggle from my early years—but also to gratitude and hope. Money represents freedom from those fears and the power to live authentically, support others, and ensure the people I care about are cared for. I feel empowered knowing I’ve moved from survival to stability, and that my story can inspire others to redefine their relationship with money.
Conclusion:
For me, “a lot of money” isn’t a specific number. It’s the power
to live authentically, care for the people I love, and leave a
meaningful legacy. This journey, full of lessons from hardship
and triumph, has shaped my understanding of money as a tool for
freedom and purpose, not an end in itself.

💬 " I
learned all about serendipity from David Boje small business
consulting class at
New Mexico State University. Serendipity means good fortune

inner visions and one day you would have a Smithsonian
traveling art exhibit colors of the wind and it would travel
all over the country and inspire millions, I would have said,
“what are you crazy? Not me, mi amigo!” and now colors of the
wind is a bestselling children’s book, currently in production
of a CBS doc film about my life story and most of my paintings
have become bestselling fabrics worldwide. Not bad for a
blind wizard!" — George Mendoza. GeorgeMendoza.com Author of Journey of The
Spirit Man.
