My story: I have spent years unraveling the stories that
have shaped my life. Therapy was powerful, but
restorying—finding those little wild moments when I broke
free from conditioned thoughts, emotions, and

This affirmation, simple yet
profound, first came into my life when I was running a
personnel company in Los Angeles. Inspired by Jerry Asam,
a descendant of Hawaiian kings who practiced the power of
positive thinking, I started incorporating this mantra
into my daily routine. I printed it on a sign in
calligraphy, displayed it prominently, and soon, it became
a rallying cry in my business. The impact of on
Master Class by Richard Chavez, in his wheel chair telling
me about HHT, giving me that card had impact on my family
life, my teaching, my consulting and my personnel agency.
I made cards by hand for everyone, and we cheered each

initially skeptical, stood on their chairs and chanted, I

Then, I lost my way. A harsh
critique at a conference derailed me. I abandoned my
accessible, engaging storytelling and dove into dense
academic writing. I wanted to be respected, to prove I was
a serious scholar. I wrote over twenty critical theory
books, distancing myself from the general audience that
once resonated with my work. My ego-driven pursuit of
academic recognition made my work increasingly complex,
understood only by a select few. The problem? I had lost
my connection to what truly mattered—helping people
transform their lives through storytelling.
I found my way back through restorying. I realized I had
been telling myself a limiting narrative—that my worth was
tied to intellectual prestige rather than impact. My wife,
Grace Anne Rose, and my colleagues at the True
Storytelling Institute encouraged me to reclaim my true
calling: making storytelling accessible, simple, and
